November 2008: Bristol Design Awards
Tektura, University of Glamorgan and Spatial Design
This year we set the students at Glamorgan University a bit
of a challenge. 20 students were asked to create new design
concepts and interior schemes using Tektura Wallcoverings,
Milliken Carpet and Johnson Tiles. They chose from four
themes; Avant Garde, Fashion Design, Time Zone and
Futurism, then had to incorporate this into their leisure, office
or retail interiors concept.
The elimination stage a week before the final awards
meant that only 11 out of the 20 students could go
through. It was a really hard decision to make and they
blew us away with some of the best work we had ever
seen in the competition.
Winner - Mira Khleif
"Tektura Wallcoverings, Milliken Carpet and Johnson Tiles were great companies to work with. The project given to us was a challenging one specially that it wasn't hypothetical but a real one, it gave us great experience and exposure to renowned architects and designers, it improved our
presentation skills, communication with others and boosted our confidence. My plan for the future is to hopefully be offered a job in the UK for at least a year, which would help me gain knowledge and would strengthen my skills".
2nd Place - Jemma Greve
"I enjoyed the challenge of using these
specified materials in a creative manner to
generate a practical and commercial design. We were very lucky to work with companies that have such a
variety of products, as well as the option of customization; this allowed my design to be very unique.
Using the genuine bespoke samples I ordered, made the whole scheme come alive for myself and others, when
explaining the concept.
"I wish to travel in the future, to further inspire my design process and to gain some invaluable
design experience along the way."
3rd Place - Adam Croft
‘"The project was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish and it has been the highlight of my design course
presenting both a challenging and invaluable design experience in my development as a designer. The fact that it was a competition created a pleasant buzz within the group which intensified as the elimination stage drew closer and certainly, on a personal level, at the final in Bristol. The fact that we had a chance to work so intimately with Tektura gave us a chance to understand, in depth, the materials, their manufacturing processes and their potential applications.
Throughout the entire project I found our Tektura point of contact very helpful and responded promptly to any issues I had, from discussing the potential of a material to ordering samples.
When I graduate I wish to develop further my existing skills by working abroad."
